New research, industry collaboration and practical support for the used EV market reached a wide audience during the BVRLA's #UsedEVWeek, with activity generating national and trade media coverage alongside strong engagement across social media.
Running from 21–27 September, the campaign brought together evidence and perspectives from across the sector to address some of the questions influencing demand for used EVs. Content spanned insights on vehicle reliability, affordability, battery health and customer confidence, as well as where members are seeing the market evolve. The week was designed to concentrate industry activity around the developing second-hand market and help build longer-term demand.
One of the week's major announcements was new BVRLA-commissioned research that analysed 47.4 million MOT tests. The findings challenged traditional assumptions around high-mileage vehicles, showing that EV MOT failure rates level off from around 60,000 miles while rates for petrol and diesel cars continue to rise. At 90,000–120,000 miles, EVs were around 25% less likely to fail than equivalent petrol cars. The research attracted extensive national and automotive trade media coverage.
Later in the week, the BVRLA joined the Independent Motor Dealers Association (IMDA) and EVA England to launch EV Retail Ready, a free training programme designed to give independent dealers practical knowledge and confidence to stock and sell used EVs. The initiative is supported by BVRLA members and industry partners including Lex Autolease, mfldirect, Octopus Electric Vehicles and Zenith.
#UsedEVWeek also provided a platform for member and industry insight. Blogs from Tusker's Jodie Monaghan and Arval UK's John Peters explored changing demand, affordability and the growing role of second-life vehicles, while Generational CEO Oliver Phillpott looked at battery condition and why age and mileage alone cannot provide the full picture when assessing used EV risk.
The week's podcast brought another perspective on battery health, with Adam Forshaw joined by Oliver Phillpott and Alex Wright of Shoreham Vehicle Auctions to discuss what battery testing can reveal about used EV reliability and the developing market.
Activity throughout the week generated strong engagement on LinkedIn, with members and organisations across the sector contributing their own evidence, experiences and perspectives under #UsedEVWeek.
