Independent dealers can now access free training designed to build the knowledge and confidence needed to stock and sell used EVs, through the new industry-backed EV Retail Ready programme.

Launched as part of #UsedEVWeek last week and developed by the BVRLA, Independent Motor Dealers Association (IMDA) and EVA England, the programme responds to the growing volumes of EVs entering the second-hand market. It is supported by Lex Autolease, mfldirect, Octopus Electric Vehicles and Zenith.

With leasing companies and fleet operators supplying a growing number of electric vehicles to the used market, supporting dealers and customers further along the vehicle lifecycle is an important part of developing a sustainable second-hand market.

EV Retail Ready contains four online modules covering commercial viability, energy and charging, in-life costs and the customer journey. The programme takes up to two hours to complete and also provides access to the ClearWatt EV Explorer, giving dealers vehicle-specific information on areas including batteries, charging and real-world range.

Individuals completing the training receive accreditation, while dealerships can achieve wider accreditation when all consumer-facing staff have completed the programme.

The initiative has also received support from Roads and Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood, who said: “Used EVs are a great way to go electric while saving on upfront costs. Customers want trusted dealers who know how they run, and this training will help deliver that.”

Independent dealers can find out more and register for EV Retail Ready through the IMDA website. BVRLA members wanting to find out more about the programme or support the initiative can contact [email protected].
