The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched action to improve standards across the private parking sector, following concerns about the sharp rise in parking charges issued to motorists.
The regulator has written to private parking operators about their appeals processes and additional charges, while urging the wider sector to ensure its practices comply with consumer law. It has also published guidance to help motorists understand the private parking system and avoid unnecessary costs.
Alongside its enforcement activity, the CMA has made recommendations to Government on the proposed Private Parking Code of Practice. These include improving communication with motorists, making appeals fairer and more consistent, and strengthening requirements around drivers' rights and consideration periods.
