A new £1 billion government funding package has been announced to accelerate the rollout of zero-emission vans and trucks, alongside expanded support for depot-based charging infrastructure.
The measures are designed to address two of the most significant barriers facing fleet operators: the high upfront cost of zero-emission vehicles and access to reliable, scalable charging. Financial support includes grants of up to £81,000 for the heaviest zero-emission trucks and up to £5,000 for electric vans, helping to narrow the cost gap with conventional vehicles.
Alongside vehicle incentives, the government has committed £170 million to expand the Depot Charging Scheme. This will support businesses and public sector organisations in installing charging infrastructure at scale, with potential savings of up to £1 million per site depending on project scope.
The funding is intended to support organisations as they transition their fleets, reducing exposure to fuel price volatility while contributing to wider decarbonisation goals. It also reflects ongoing efforts to provide greater certainty for operators planning long-term investment in zero-emission technologies.
The BVRLA has created a dedicated guidance resource (log-in is required) to outline the key aspects of these announcements and provide clarity on how members and their customers can utilise the support.
Members will shortly be invited to a webinar, during which attendees will hear from those to have benefited from the Depot Charging Scheme to date, and gain a better understanding of how to manage the application process.
