The Department for Transport (DfT) is consulting on changes to the GB type-approval scheme for new passenger and goods vehicles, including proposals that could affect some security-sensitive vehicle repair and maintenance work.
Much of the consultation covers technical standards and approval processes for vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers. Proposed changes include recognising certain EU component approvals to reduce duplicate certification, updating requirements for newer vehicle technologies and clarifying rules around maximum permitted towing masses.
For BVRLA members, the proposals relating to repair and maintenance information are likely to be of greater relevance. The consultation considers how proportionate cybersecurity checks should apply to certain higher-risk work, such as vehicle programming, coding or configuration.
If introduced, these requirements could mean approved tools, authentication and potentially additional lead time are needed for some security-sensitive work. Routine diagnostic and repair activity is expected to remain largely unaffected.
The consultation closes on 29 September. Members involved in vehicle maintenance and fleet management are encouraged to review the proposals and consider whether they could affect their operations.
