Used EVs: Unlocking the Independent Trade

Representatives from government, the motor trade and BVRLA membership recently convened for a round table to explore how to stimulate demand in the used electric vehicle market. While new EV registrations continue to climb, evidence suggests that many independent dealers remain hesitant to stock used EVs. Without stronger confidence across the independent trade, the used EV market will be unable to absorb  that growing supply.

To explore these challenges, the BVRLA-convened roundtable brought together representatives from Tesla, the Independent Motor Dealers Association (IMDA) and its members, BVRLA members, Autotrader and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). The discussion was hosted by Mobility Operations, who shared insights from recent analysis examining the barriers and concerns facing independent dealers.

A consistent theme emerged throughout the discussion: confidence. What is required is not simply isolated initiatives, but a comprehensive package of support that gives dealers the confidence to both stock and actively market used EVs.

The roundtable marked an important step in identifying shared challenges and opportunities. The BVRLA will continue this dialogue with industry partners and policymakers, working to develop tangible actions that boost EV demand among independent dealers and strengthen consumer confidence in purchasing used electric vehicles.
