TyreSafe is reminding drivers about the potential safety risks associated with part-worn tyres following enforcement activity that identified examples of dangerous and non-compliant tyres being offered for sale.
Joint inspections with Trading Standards, police and local authorities found safety and compliance issues in both Norfolk and Lancashire. In Norfolk, 36% of 191 part-worn tyres inspected were found to be in a dangerous condition, while only one met all legal safety and marking requirements. A separate operation in Lancashire found that none of the 30 part-worn tyres inspected met the legal requirements.
Issues identified included exposed cords, structural and sidewall damage, poor repairs and tyres without the legally required 'PART-WORN' marking. TyreSafe is reminding motorists that the history of a part-worn tyre may not be known and some damage or deterioration may not be immediately visible.
Members can reinforce the importance of regular tyre checks with customers, including TyreSafe's ACT approach: checking air pressure, condition and tread. Customers replacing tyres should also be encouraged to use reputable suppliers and ensure any part-worn tyres meet the appropriate legal requirements.
