BVRLA members are encouraged to remind drivers and customers of the importance of regular tyre checks as TyreSafe marks Tyre Safety Month with its latest safety campaign.
New research from the tyre safety charity highlights a gap between drivers' confidence and their understanding of stopping distances. While 83% believe they are in full control of their stopping distance, only 6% correctly identified the stopping distance in wet conditions at motorway speeds. The research also found that 38% of drivers had experienced a near-miss in the past year, but only 11% checked their tyres afterwards.
TyreSafe's ACT Before You REact campaign encourages drivers to carry out three simple checks every month and before long journeys:
Air pressure - ensuring tyres are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended levels
Condition - checking for cuts, bulges and other visible damage
Tread - ensuring sufficient depth to maintain grip, particularly in wet conditions.
Members can help reinforce this message by encouraging customers and drivers to check their tyres and act promptly on any tyre pressure dashboard warnings, rather than ignoring them.
Members can find further information and resources to share with drivers and customers on the TyreSafe website.
