Changes to tachograph requirements will come into force from 1 July 2026, extending existing rules to include certain vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) operating internationally.
Under the new requirements, vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes will need to be fitted with a Smart Tachograph 2 where they are used for hire and reward on cross-border journeys within the EU. The changes form part of the EU Mobility Package, bringing smaller vehicles engaged in international commercial activity into scope of drivers’ hours regulations.
For BVRLA members, this will require close engagement with customers to identify vehicles operating in scope and ensure appropriate systems are in place. It is important to note that the rules apply only where vehicles are used to transport goods for payment, and do not apply to domestic UK-only operations.
Members are encouraged to review the full guidance on the BVRLA website, which outlines the requirements in detail and sets out suggested steps to prepare ahead of implementation. A member log in is required, there is a Help Centre if members are having issues accessing their account.
