Following the recent ‘vehicle as a weapon’ terror attack in Germany, the BVRLA is reminding Rental and Commercial Vehicle members of their obligations under the Rental Vehicle Security Scheme (RVSS). While it has not been confirmed whether the vehicle involved was a rental vehicle, the incident is a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining robust security procedures across the rental sector.
The RVSS forms a mandatory part of the BVRLA Rental and Commercial Vehicle Codes of Conduct and requires members to meet a 10-point Code of Practice. This includes maintaining a documented Security Plan, training staff to recognise and report suspicious behaviour, nominating a dedicated security contact and following agreed procedures for sharing information with law enforcement where appropriate.
Members should ensure their Security Plan is up to date and that staff remain familiar with the procedures for identifying and reporting suspicious activity. Regular refresher training can help ensure employees remain confident in recognising potential risks and responding appropriately.
