Minimum emission standards for new road vehicles

The Government has launched a consultation on updating the minimum emission standard for new road vehicles in Great Britain.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is seeking views on its proposal to update the minimum emission standard for new light and heavy-duty vehicles in Great Britain in line with the Euro 7 emission standard. It is also seeking views on proposals to amend existing in-service conformity requirements applicable under the Euro 6 legislation within Great Britain.

Part of the consultation will also consider the requirement for vehicles to be fitted with battery health monitors. A core part of the #HappyEVafter campaign to support the used EV market is to see an industry standard for obtaining and comparing battery health adopted across the market.

Thomas McLennan, BVRLA Director of Policy and Public Affairs, said: "This consultation has the potential to put clear, comparable, and easily accessible battery health information in the hands of drivers and fleet operators. That clarity is critical in giving used EV buyers the confidence they need to make the market stable and sustainable "

The consultation will run for six weeks until 25 May 2026.
