The BVRLA has taken members' views on the transition to zero-emission vehicles directly to Government, meeting with Road Transport Decarbonisation Minister Simon Lightwood to discuss the challenges facing the rental, leasing and fleet sectors.
BVRLA Chief Executive Toby Poston and members of the Policy and Public Affairs team met with the Minister as part of ongoing engagement around the Government's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate consultation. Drawing on extensive member workshops and survey data, Toby and the team outlined the different challenges facing businesses and the policy support needed to maintain progress towards decarbonisation.
The discussions highlighted the contrasting experiences of leasing and rental members. For car leasing, a stable used EV market and predictable Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates are essential to sustaining demand. Rental operators face different pressures, including EV depreciation, the cost of public charging and limited charging infrastructure at key locations such as airports.
The electric van market presents further challenges, with members continuing to highlight the need for improvements in vehicle payload and range, faster and more affordable depot grid connections, and solutions for fleets reliant on public charging.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the wider tax and policy environment needed to support the transition while protecting businesses and jobs. The BVRLA is finalising its consultation response, which will reflect the evidence and priorities shared by members.
With the Autumn Budget approaching and wider automotive trade discussions continuing, the association remains engaged with Government across these issues, ensuring that members' experiences and concerns are represented as policy decisions are developed.
There’s still time to write to your MP ahead of the Autumn Budget, more information can be found at: Time to back ‘Keep BiK Fair’.
