The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has announced over £700 million of investment to support advanced manufacturing, including funding for one of the largest electric vehicle battery gigafactories in Europe.
The package includes a £380 million government grant to support the development of a new facility in Somerset, aimed at strengthening domestic battery production and reducing reliance on imports. The investment forms part of the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy and is intended to support long-term growth in the automotive and manufacturing sectors.
The project is expected to support around 4,200 jobs, alongside additional roles across the wider supply chain and new apprenticeship opportunities to develop skills within the battery sector.
The announcement highlights ongoing government efforts to position the UK as a competitive location for advanced manufacturing and to support the transition to zero-emission technologies. Further details are available via the government website.
