The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has stepped up its action against unlawful marketing linked to motor finance claims, carrying out searches at residential and business premises across the UK as part of an ongoing investigation.
The action forms part of the joint regulatory taskforce involving the ICO, Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The taskforce was established to tackle poor practices in the handling and promotion of motor finance claims, including nuisance marketing and the misuse of personal data.
The ICO said the searches targeted companies believed to be responsible for sending millions of marketing text messages to members of the public. It has also reminded claims management companies, lead generators and law firms that they must comply with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), warning that it will continue to take enforcement action where it finds evidence of wrongdoing.
The latest action aims to improve standards across the motor finance claims market and protect consumers from misleading or unlawful marketing practices.
