The biggest change in the Humber Bridge’s history came into effect on 31 January. The toll booths have been removed, meaning all traffic will be able to cross without having to stop.

There is a new website, app, and more ways to pay, including the ability to buy crossings in advance, even for motorists without an account.

The BVRLA would like to highlight to members that the new Humber Bridge system will operate in a similar way to the Tyne Tunnel; members will need to pay and recharge unpaid toll charges. The Humber Bridge operators currently do not accept transfer of liability.

The BVRLA has spoken to the operators of Humber Bridge to understand how they will deal with rental and leasing companies and has established the following:

  • Where companies pay the unpaid toll notification and the customer wants to dispute it, members should provide the following link to their customer to appeal: Contact us - Humber Bridge. Refunds will be issued to the company that has paid the toll and the BVRLA has requested the unpaid toll notification reference number be included on any refunds. There are very few grounds for appeal, so the customer should be advised to only appeal if there has been a system error or similar, entering the wrong registration does not count as a reason to appeal.
  • Frequent crossings – there is a fleet account option which includes the ability for fleets to add vehicles for short periods, members may wish to encourage their customers to set up an account. Members local to the area may wish to add their own fleet. More information: Business Customers (Humber Bridge Toll).
  • Drivers have until midnight on the next charging day to pay the toll, therefore the operators wouldn’t expect issues with payments being allocated to the wrong crossings. However, if this does occur use Contact us - Humber Bridge to flag this.

Contact the BVRLA if you are having persistent issues and the association will raise this with contacts at Humber Bridge. Emails should be sent to [email protected].
