The potential annual fuel cost saving from running an electric car has risen to £960, according to the latest data from Autotrader and Zapmap, as higher petrol prices increase the cost advantage for drivers able to charge at home.

The figure, based on a typical 80/20 split between home and public charging, is £180 higher than a year ago and remains at its highest level since Zapmap began tracking the comparison in November 2023.

The latest Autotrader data also points to growing consumer interest in electrified vehicles. In July, electric and plug-in hybrid cars accounted for more than half of all new car enquiries on its platform for the first time, with 29.1% relating to electric cars and 20.8% to plug-in hybrids. Electric cars have been the most popular fuel type for new car enquiries on Autotrader since April.

The figures have been published alongside the latest quarterly update to Electric Cars: The Facts, the cross-industry campaign from Autotrader, ChargeUK and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Its latest data also shows there are now 46 new EVs with a recommended retail price below £30,000, while the UK public charging network has grown to 122,724 charging plugs.
