Euro 7: Preparing for 2027

Vehicle rental and leasing businesses are being encouraged to factor the introduction of Euro 7 emissions standards into their procurement and fleet replacement plans, following confirmation of the Government's implementation timetable.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that new cars and vans produced in unlimited series will need to meet Euro 7 requirements from 29 November 2027, subject to the necessary legislation. Small-volume manufacturers will have until 1 July 2030.

The Government has dropped the proposed November 2026 deadline for new vehicle types in Great Britain, although Northern Ireland will follow the earlier EU timetable. The November 2027 deadline for new registrations will align across the UK, with EU and equivalent United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) approvals accepted to minimise duplicate testing.

Euro 7 introduces requirements covering brake and tyre emissions, electric vehicle battery durability and battery-health monitoring. The Government has also confirmed some flexibility for specialist vehicles and replacement brakes, while a further consultation will address implementation for trucks, buses and coaches.

Members should discuss vehicle availability and transition arrangements with suppliers, particularly where orders, conversions or registrations may extend beyond November 2027. Those procuring vehicles for use across Great Britain and Northern Ireland should also check the differing interim requirements.

Members can read the Government's consultation response. Questions or practical concerns can be directed to James Vickery.
