The BVRLA is calling for members to write to their MPs about the ill-timed proposal of e-VED (pay per mile). e-VED is the wrong tax at the wrong time and could be the leaden weight that breaks the back of the transition.
The transition to EVs remains fragile with the latter years in the transition targeting steeper increases in EV adoption that the years they follow. The UK's ZEV Mandate on manufacturers is one of the most ambitious in the world. Yet the fundamentals underpinning the financial viability of meeting its targets are not yet sustainable.
This week, members of the BVRLA policy team are on a study tour of Iceland, meeting with different sectors, especially rental, to find out how EV taxes affect them. Iceland is one of the few nations to have introduced a similar pay-per-distance model, learnings there will be valuable to apply to the UK.
The association also hosted a drinks reception in Whitehall last week to discuss the future tax framework. Guests heard from Michael Dnes from Stonehaven and other prominent speakers in this space. Further to this, BVRLA members were represented at the Electric Vehicle All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Thursday 11 Dec. It brought together stakeholders from across the ecosystem and gave the opportunity to discuss challenges with e-VED, as it’s currently proposed, and influence those with shared interest in finding a workable alternative solution.
Members are urged to write to their MP: Find your MP – Tell them about EV pay-per-mile — BVRLA.
