With one of the peak periods for deer collisions approaching, BVRLA members are encouraged to remind customers and drivers to take extra care, particularly when travelling around dawn and after sunset.
Analysis from The AA shows that collisions involving deer generated more than £455,000 in claims costs during 2025 and 2026 to date. With modern vehicles containing increasingly sophisticated technology, even relatively localised damage can result in complex repairs, increased costs and longer vehicle downtime.
Deer collisions are most common during May and June, when young animals move away from breeding areas, and from October to November during the rutting season. The highest-risk times are around sunrise and between sunset and midnight.
Members can help by reminding customers and drivers to be particularly alert when travelling at these times, especially on routes where deer may be present. Any collision or vehicle damage should be reported promptly to the rental or leasing provider so that the appropriate repair and safety procedures can be followed.
