The BVRLA recently met with Philip New, Independent Chair of the Department for Transport’s Cost of Charging Review, to discuss the key challenges facing fleet operators as the transition to electric vehicles continues.

The review is focused on addressing the growing disparity between those who can charge at home and those who cannot. During the meeting, the BVRLA’s Chief Executive Toby Poston and Head of Decarbonisation & Future Mobility, Catherine Bowen highlighted member concerns around the cost of public charging, the expense and complexity of installing infrastructure at depots and rental locations, and the ongoing challenges linked to grid connections. Issues around accessibility, particularly for van operators and those without access to home charging, were also raised.

The discussion covered the importance of fairness and transparency in pricing, including ensuring that users receive the level of service for which they are paying. The review is expected to consider these areas as it develops its recommendations, with outcomes anticipated later this year.

These themes will be explored further at the BVRLA’s Fleets in Charge Conference on 1 July in London, where a dedicated session will examine the cost of charging and the interventions needed to support wider adoption. Chaired by Tom Rowlands (FleetCor), the panel will include Vickie Edmonds (EVA England), Melanie Shufflebotham (Zapmap), Matthew Waller (The Charge Scheme) and Neil Sharpe (Pod) offering perspectives on how costs can be managed and reduced.

The event will provide opportunities for networking and discussion throughout the day, supported by event partners Allstar, Autotrader, AVILOO, The AA, Fleet Assist and Nexus Vehicle Management, with exhibitors including Jaama, Targa Telematics, The Charge Scheme and Volteras.
