The Department for Transport (DfT) is seeking views on proposals to strengthen the law around emissions from road vehicles in use across Great Britain, with a consultation open until 6 September.
The proposals would require vehicles to continue meeting the emissions standards that applied when they were first manufactured. This would prohibit using, allowing the use of, or modifying a vehicle in a way that means it no longer complies with its original emissions approval.
If introduced, the changes could place greater emphasis on ensuring maintenance and repair practices keep emissions systems fully functional, while increasing the legal and reputational risks associated with tampered or removed emissions equipment. Members may also need to consider the impact on vehicle preparation and compliance when remarketing vehicles.
