Following last week’s update on changes affecting zero-emission vans, the Department for Transport (DfT) has provided further clarification on testing requirements for existing 4.25 tonne vehicles already operating on fleet.
Members had raised questions about whether vehicles that had already undergone a heavy vehicle test in year one would then require annual testing, or move into the standard Class 7 MOT schedule.
The DfT has confirmed that where a van has already completed a heavy vehicle test in its first year, it will not require a further heavy vehicle test in year two. Instead, the vehicle will move to the standard Class 7 MOT regime and require its next test three years from registration.
While the original heavy vehicle test certificate will technically expire after one year, the DfT has confirmed this does not create an issue, as the vehicle will no longer fall within that testing regime from 1 June.
