The BVRLA is urging members to make their voices heard on the Government’s consultation on the proposed Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED), warning that the policy risks introducing unnecessary complexity at a critical moment in the transition to electric vehicles.
Under the proposal, EV drivers would need to estimate their annual mileage in order to determine the level of tax they pay. While intended to introduce a road tax framework for electric vehicles, the BVRLA believes the proposed mechanism could create significant administrative burden and operational challenges, particularly for fleet operators managing large numbers of vehicles.
The sector has played a vital role in driving EV adoption, helping to normalise electric motoring and supply the growing used EV market. Introducing new costs and complexity for EV users at this stage risks undermining the strong progress made so far.
The BVRLA is responding to the consultation and highlighting the operational realities for fleets, businesses and drivers. However, engagement from across the membership will strengthen the industry’s case for a more practical approach.
Members are encouraged to:
- Write to your MP to explain how the proposed tax could affect your business, fleet operations and customers.

MPs play an important role in shaping transport policy, hearing directly from businesses in their constituencies can help ensure decision-makers understand the real-world impacts.
With the consultation closing on 18 March, now is the time for the sector to speak up and help shape a more effective approach to EV taxation.
