National Highways has advised of planned overnight closures on the A66 to support the installation of average speed cameras between M6 Junction 40 and Temple Sowerby.
The A66 is a key east–west freight corridor across the North of England, members may wish to advise customers operating in the area that they should be aware of potential disruption.
Closures will take place from Tuesday 5 May to Saturday 9 May 2026, between 00:00 and 05:00 each night. During these times, there will be a full closure in both directions between Kemplay Roundabout and Temple Sowerby, with a fully signed diversion route in place.
In addition, lane closures will be in operation on Friday 8 May from 20:00 to 05:00 on the westbound carriageway between Kemplay Roundabout and M6 Junction 40.
Extended journey times are expected throughout the closure periods. For HGV operators, diversion routes will be significantly longer, with vehicles required to travel via the M6, A69 and A1 (approximately 185km) due to restrictions through Kirkby Stephen. Advance signage will be in place to help drivers make early routing decisions.
These works are being carried out to improve safety and compliance with speed limits, respond to concerns around driver behaviour, and support safer conditions ahead of major construction works planned for later in 2026.
