The legislative changes introduced on 1 June 2026 brought welcome simplification to the MOT requirements for 4.25-tonne zero-emission vans. However, members should be aware of a temporary issue affecting the DVSA's MOT History Service and MOT Reminder Service while the new regime is reflected in its systems.
Despite the new arrangements now being in place, some vehicles continue to be incorrectly flagged through the DVSA MOT History Service and MOT Reminder Service as having an expired or overdue MOT. This relates to a previous HGV annual test that is no longer applicable, rather than the vehicle's current Class 7 MOT requirement.
DVSA has confirmed it is aware of the issue and is working to update its systems, although no timescale has been provided. In the meantime, members should use the vehicle's date of first registration to determine when its first Class 7 MOT is due. The DVSA has advised that, where an expired MOT banner is displayed, this may relate to the previous HGV testing regime rather than the vehicle's current legal testing requirement. Members can also refer to the published DVSA guidance on Car MOTs and HGV MOTs while the system updates are completed.
