The European Commission has published tougher emissions targets for new HGVs, which require a 90% cut in CO2 emissions from new trucks by 2040.
The new targets align with the EU’s aim to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The proposals outline a phased approach to emissions reduction, requiring truck manufacturers to cut CO2 output by 45% in 2030, 65% in 2035 and 90% in 2040.
Previous rules required a 30% reduction in new truck emissions by 2030.
The European Parliament and EU governments will debate the proposal before agreeing the final law later this year.
