Transport for London (TfL) has published the findings of a recent consultation on the existing HGV safety scheme and where improvements can be targeted.
The report confirms that, from October 2024, HGVs over 12 tonnes will be required to have a three-star rating or fit a Progressive Safe System of vehicle safety measures to operate in Greater London.
It is believed that improving vehicle safety features will further reduce the level or risk to vulnerable road users – such as pedestrians and cyclists. Data in the report shows a 75% reduction in fatal collisions, where vision is a factor, since the Direct Vision Standard was introduced.
There will be a three-month grace period to allow operators sufficient time to make any necessary changes. Timings are due to be reviewed in June 2024.
