New way of sharing driving licence details

DVLA Service Designer, Neil Akass, talks about a new service allowing drivers to store a QR code on their mobile phone to share driving licence details.

As you may already know, our existing view or share services allow drivers to share their licence information with third parties - such as vehicle hire companies and employers - by generating a unique, single-use check code. The code lasts for 21 days and it can be redeemed using the check someone’s driving licence service.

We’ve now developed a new way to use our view, share and check driving licence online services which gives our customers greater choice in how they access our services and in a way that suits them. Most people have their phone to hand, and this is a convenient, easy and secure way for drivers to share their licence details when they need to.

The new service is open to GB photocard licence holders and generates a QR code on the driver’s smartphone. The code can be redeemed via the redesigned check driving licence page which activates the user’s webcam on their PC, laptop or tablet. This will present the same information as the current service e.g. licence categories, endorsements and disqualifications etc. but the new process should prove quicker and easier for both parties.

However, the existing unique, single-use check code service will still be available to users. The same rules apply for both services – which includes requesting sight of the physical driving licence to confirm the details.

This is the next step on our digital journey and we think the service will prove a hit with the motoring public and corporate customers alike.
