The Department for Transport (DfT) is implementing new legislation for tachographs in line with requirements under the EU Drivers’ Hours regime.
The new legislation will mean:
A smart tachograph 2 will need to be installed and used in vehicles registered for the first time on or after 21 August 2023.
For other vehicles - used for international journeys between the UK and EU – a smart tachograph 2 will need to be installed in three cases. These are:
-
on or after 31 December 2024, for vehicles equipped with an analogue tachograph or a digital tachograph
-
on or after 19 August 2025, for vehicles equipped with a smart tachograph 1; and
-
on or after 1 July 2026, for vehicles with a maximum permissible mass, including any trailer or semi-trailer, between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes, used for hire or reward transport
There are concerns around supply of smart tachograph 2 but the European Commission is confident that any supply issues will be resolved ahead of the August 2023 date, however the DfT will monitor the situation closely.
