From 6 April 2025, updated rules relating to fake reviews and drip pricing came into effect. The changes were brought in under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCCA), replacing the current Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (CPUTRs) 2008.
While much of the previous law remains the same, the updated legislation includes stronger protections for consumers, particularly around:
- Fake reviews (where non-customers review a company to intentionally skew its score and reputation)
- ‘Drip pricing’ (where additional costs are only revealed late in the buying process).
Members should review their commercial practices to ensure they meet the updated requirements. Guidance has been published to help firms understand and comply with the new rules: Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations: OFT1008 | GOV.UK.
