The BVRLA estimates that there were 15.5million rental transactions by UK residents in 2015; 10.9 million of these involved cars and 4.6million involved vans.
The key reasons for choosing to rent a car rather than using another transport mode were: convenience and flexibility, complex travel itineraries or the need to transport luggage or bulky items.
The figures in this data sheet were compiled from a TNS online omnibus survey of 2,470 adults, a TRL customer car rental survey of 1,691 customers and BVRLA member data.
