Last Wednesday (17 April) the BVRLA attended a 'Future of Transport' hustings for London Mayoral Candidates, hosted by Clean Cities. The BVRLA was one of over 20 supporting organisations for the event.
Speakers included Liberal Democrat representative Chris Maines, Conservative Party representative Andrew Boff, Labour Party representative Mete Coban, and Green Party candidate Zoe Garbett.
The event was a good opportunity to ensure that the role of the car in the London transport eco-system was recognised. Questions from the audience focused on air quality, cycling safety and accessibility of the transport network. Candidates were, however, also asked about the role of shared cars with all of them acknowledging the importance of schemes such as car clubs and issues such as parking being flagged as a current barrier that should be overcome by the next mayor to support these vehicles.
The BVRLA is currently undertaking a large-scale piece of rental research that considers the role of shared car use. It will be launching a dedicated campaign later this year to promote the benefits of rental and car club vehicles.
