Electric van transition under the spotlight

Making it easier and cheaper for operators to use zero emission vans is the focus of a new consultation launched by the Department for Transport. Open until 3 March, the consultation is specifically seeking industry views on roadworthiness testing and drivers’ hours rules.

Providing greater regulatory flexibility is one of the core aspects highlighted by the Zero Emission Van Plan. That plan highlights the need for 4.25t electric vans to be given the same treatment as 3.5t diesel vans. The removal of those regulatory barriers would see 4.25t electric vans MOT’d as vans, not HGVs, while stopping drivers being subject to the EU drivers’ hours rules if driving further than 62 miles.

Both barriers are currently placing additional burdens and expenses on operators, increasing vehicle downtime and hampering the transition to electric vans. The nature of the consultation gives the BVRLA and its members the opportunity to outline these challenges and suggest suitable solutions.

The BVRLA will be formally responding to the suggestion on behalf of its members, and in collaboration with the coalition partners behind the Zero Emission Van Plan (Logistics UK, the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP), Recharge UK, and The EV Café).
