The Government is intending to amend planning regulations relating to Permitted Development Rights (PDRs), looking to remove barriers for the Chargepoint, EV and Fleet industry.
Local authorities benefit from PDRs when installing public electric vehicle chargepoints. PDRs give local authorities blanket planning permission, without the need for applications, when installing public chargepoints in most circumstances. Chargepoint providers do not benefit from PDRs and must complete a planning permission application for every public chargepoint they install.
Following consultation by government, this is now going to change.
From 26 July 2023, local authorities will be able to appoint chargepoint providers to install chargepoints on their behalf. This means that appointed chargepoint providers will be able to also benefit from PDRs, reducing chargepoint delivery times by up to 12 weeks.
This announcement will enable the faster roll-out of EV chargepoints and aligns with government’s aim to ensure all drivers can access an adequate level of EV charging provision across the country.
