DfT consults to allow car licence holders to drive heavier vehicles
Release Date:
31/07/2017

DfT have launched a consultation on a proposed increase to the permissible weight of vehicles on a category B licence, taking into account the additional weight of ULEV powertrains.

Government is trying to establish low-emission light commercial vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vans to help improve air quality in our towns and cities and meet legal obligations under the Climate Change Act and air quality regulations.

The proposals set out in this consultation would allow category B (car) licence holders to drive a slightly heavier vehicle, if it is powered by a low-emission technology, by offsetting the additional weight of the powertrain.

BVRLA members can respond to the consultation before 18 October 2017.
