London low emission zone

The London low emission zone (LEZ) came into operation in February 2008. The scheme aims to reduce emissions of diesel-powered commercial vehicles in London by imposing a charge to those vehicles that do not meet the required emission standards.

Check the Quick Links box for information on the operation of the London Low Emission Zone.

Current position

The BVRLA is lobbying Transport for London (TfL) to amend the definition of van which is proposed under the scheme. Currently a van is defined as being between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. This definition is not commonly known and it will be difficult for van users to determine whether or not their van needs to meet the LEZ requirements. The BVRLA is therefore proposing that TfL look apply a more common definition.

Transport for London consultation

Transport for London is consulting on behalf of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnsonn, on deferring the date that the low emission zone will apply to larger vans (vans between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight), minibuses or motor caravans from 4 October 2010 to 3 January 2012. From 3 January 2012 vehicles which fail to meet the Euro 3 emission standards for particulate matter will have to pay a daily charge to travel in the LEZ (the greater London area).

The consultation has now closed and the BVRLA response can be accessed by clicking here.

To read more on the consultation please see the TfL website.
